Pharmacy-based Preventive Services
Regular preventive care, including immunizations, screenings, and anticipatory guidance delivered through well-child visits, is key to optimizing pediatric health and development. State-level policy expansions have increased access to pharmacy-based preventive services (PPS) for children and adolescents. With funding from the National Institute of Health, Dr Newcomer and her team, working with collaborators from the University of South Carolina, Temple University Beasley School of Law, the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and Chapman University School of Pharmacy, to establish a database of state laws and policies regarding PPS for children and adolescents, to quantify use of PPS nationwide, and to assess the impact of PPS on well-child visits.

Advancing Vaccine Informatics, Communication, and Education: The AdVICE Team Science Initiative
Through three highly collaborative and overlapping projects, we are collaborating with investigators of the University of Nebraska Medical Center to develop a parent-facing mHealth tool to promote adherence to preventive care recommendations, including childhood vaccinations.
Modernizing Vaccine Surveillance
All states maintain an immunization information system (IIS), which consolidates vaccination records from across clinics. Dr. Newcomer and her team lead initiatives to advance applications of IIS data for population health purposes. Such innovations include methods for identifying geographic areas at highest risk of vaccine-preventable diseases, and leveraging IIS data to inform local and state public health responses to low vaccination coverage in communities.
