

Dr. Sophia Newcomer is a vaccine epidemiologist and associate professor at the University of Montana. Her work focuses on immunization services delivery, vaccine safety, and rural health.
Dr. Newcomer leads projects as an investigator with the University of Montana’s Center for Population Health Research (CPHR). Within CPHR, her research group of students, staff, and faculty collaborators drives innovations in how vaccination uptake is measured and tracked, and in identifying strategies to improve vaccination rates in rural and medically-underserved areas.
Dr. Newcomer has served as a principal investigator or project lead on multiple grants funded from the National Institutes of Health, and she frequently collaborates with the Montana state health department’s immunization program.
Dr. Newcomer and her team's research has been published in JAMA Network Open, Pediatrics, and the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and has been covered by ABC News, National Public Radio, and Healio News.
